Here’s 10 observations from Saturday morning’s somewhat rainy practice…
1. Coach John Fox said WR Charly Martin has a broken finger and will be out a few weeks. That greatly diminishes his chances of making the roster, especially with Kenny Moore playing so well and limited openings at the wide receiver position.
2. On the injury front, LB Jamar Williams returned to practice, but DE Charles Johnson (hamstring) and RB Tyrell Sutton (calf) remain out along with the other six PUP listers.
3. Panthers DL coach Brian Baker spent the majority of practice on Corvey Irvin’s back trying to get the second-year tackle up to speed. Irvin spent last season on injured reserve so it’s been quite awhile since he’s been in pads. The Panthers are counting on Irvin being a backup defensive tackle this year.
4. Gosh, Kenny Moore just keeps pouring it on. Moore beat Richard Marshall deep for a touchdown during one-on-one drills. A little while later he caught a ball downfield and did a spin move leaving Marshall in the dust again. Moore has been impressive.
5. Owner Jerry Richardson made an appearance at practice. He drove around in a golf cart with Steve Smith by his side for a good portion of practice. The two have a close relationship that goes back a long time. Smith views Richardson as a father figure.
6. Eric Norwood is a busy guy during certain portions of practice, running back and forth between working with the defensive ends on pass rush drills and the linebackers during coverage drills
7. The Panthers worked on field goals today and it doesn’t look like John Kasay has lost any leg strength. The 40-year-old was pounding everything hard through the uprights just as he’s done for years.
8. I’m still not sure if the Panthers will keep kickoff specialist Todd Carter or let Jason Baker handle that role.
9. We’ve been riding Dwayne Jarrett pretty good, but he did do a little better in practice today making a few nice catches. Still, I think he’s being out performed by Moore and Brandon LaFell. As coach John Fox said of LaFell, “He definitely fits.”
10. No surprise here, but the Captain Munnerlyn worked as the first-team nickel back.
