Under a new rule, the Panthers would have had to pay their draft picks their regular bse salaries even if they kept them on the practice squad, but they wound up keeping nine of them. (Practice squad guys normally make about $80,000 per year.)
Only CB R.J. Stanford was cut.
But GM Marty Hurney said the roster moves were not money-related.
“I think it’s hard to win,” Hurney said. “If we wouldn’t have kept nine of 10 draft picks and we would have kept two of 10 we would have been criticized for not drafting well. I guess it’s hard to win sometimes. I think that we’re making the best decisions for this football team and that will play out. The players we kept didn’t have anything to do with money, they had to do with who we felt was going to help our football team the most.”
Make no doubt it, the Panthers are young:
Of the 53 players on the roster, 29 of them are 24 years old or younger and 47 of the 53 are 27 or younger.
Here’s the breakdown by age:
Age 22: 8
Age 23: 8

Age: 26: 8
Age 27: 5
