The Carolina Panthers re-signed CB C.J. Wilson on Friday, a sign they aren’t sure if starting CB Chris Gamble will be ready to go against Tampa Bay.
Gamble did not practice on Friday after a mid-week ankle injury and is listed as questionable on the injury report issued by the team. Because the Panthers only have four cornerbacks on the roster (five if you include versatile SS Marcus Hudson), they felt the need to sign Wilson, who spent the past few years here and went to training camp with the team before being cut.
To make room on the roster, the Panthers placed WR Charly Martin on injured reserve. Martin couldn’t seem to stay healthy. After breaking his finger in training camp, he suffered a concussion in the season opener against the New York Giants and then injured his hamstring this week in practice. Given the hamstring could be a three-to-six week injury, the Panthers couldn’t afford to save him a roster spot. With Martin out for the season, look for either WR Armanti Edwards or WR David Gettis to be activated as the No. 4 receiver this week.
Along with Gamble, three other starters are likely to miss Sunday’s game.
RT Jeff Otah (knee) has already been ruled out, while DT Louis Leonard (elbow) is doubtful and DE Tyler Brayton (ankle) is questionable. Expect Everette Brown to start at RDE in place of Brayton, while either DT Nick Hayden or rookie Andre Neblett should get a jersey this week if Leonard can’t go.
Also, LB Jordan Senn (ankle) is questionable.
In other injury news, the Panthers listed QB Matt Moore (concussion) on the injury report as probable, but he will start Sunday against Tampa Bay. Also, RB Tyrell Sutton (shoulder) and WR Brandon LaFell (hamstring) are probable and should play.
