Reeder's Take

Smith thinks his barking at Clausen was overblown

WR Steve Smith has always been an emotional player and this past Sunday television cameras caught him barking at rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen on the sidelines during a 20-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Smith addressed the issue on Wednesday in front of a group of reporters.

“It was said that I was just about to ‘go off’ and I wasn’t,” Smith said. “I thought it was interesting because we’re here and I was obviously agitated and frustrated, but sometimes people think they know me better than I know myself. So I think that’s a joke and I think the people that reported it are jokes.”

As for whether it’s important for a quarterback and receiver to develop chemistry, Smith had this take: “I think chemistry between everybody is important. You have to have it but I think it develops as you make plays together. You can’t learn anything by watching. You can’t learn how to make a sandwich by watching somebody else make it. Until you actually start doing it and start to see the mistakes that’s how you learn. They say you learn from your mistakes. But if you are not in there making mistakes, you won’t learn anything. They call those, um, fans.”

Smith had some other interesting things to say and we’ll have a story later.
