Sounds like coach John Fox is trying to distance himself from an organization that’s 0-5 in what will be his final season with the Panthers. When I asked him if, given the team’s current struggles in the passing game, he’s regretting the decision not to bring in an experienced wide receiver this offseason, Fox offered this interesting response.
“Again, those aren’t my decisions,” Fox said. “Like I said, we’ve got what we’ve got. But it’s where we are and we coach who we got and try to get them better and hopefully get the results we want.”
Fox will be looking for another team in January when he becomes a coaching free agent, and a season like this doesn’t do much for his stock as a head coach. So expect Fox to remind folks around the league from time to time that it wasn’t his idea to blow up the team this past offseason and go cheap. (The Panthers didn’t sign any veteran free agents from outside the organization to anything more than league veteran minimum contracts).
It was reminiscent of when I asked Fox about the decision to trade SS Chris Harris earlier this year and he mentioned the team’s ”budget” was a factor.
