Carolina Panthers strong safety will basically be playing football for free the next couple of weeks.

The NFL fined Martin $40,000 on Wednesday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Browns tight end Evan Moore in Sunday’s 24-23 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

It’s his second offense of the season, which apparently led to the larger fine. Martin was fined $5,000 for his Week 1 hit on New York Giants tight end Kevin Boss. That hit showed up on a video sent out by the league a few weeks later demonstrating how not to hit opposing players as the league began cracking down on hits to the head.

“Man, can you believe that?” Martin said to a teammate before leaving to head into the team’s training room without further comment.

Martin is making the league’s second-year mininum, which pays him $23,235 per week.
