Reeder's Take

BREAKING NEWS: Panthers closing in on Rivera as next head coach

Ron Rivera has interviewed for eight diferrent head coaching jobs in the NFL.

The ninth time may be a charm.

Rivera is interviewing with the Panthers for a second time today at an undisclosed location and sources closes to the situation said the team appears to have locked in on him as the guy they want to hire as their next head coach. As of now no deal has been reached, but it looks like the team could be ready to make him an offer.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney has not returned phone calls seeking comment. A team spokesman said he had no knowledge of where the team’s coaching search stood.

It’s also unclear if owner Jerry Richardson was involved in the second interview, but in all likelihood Richardson would want to meet Rivera and talk to him before making a hire.

Rivera’s Chargers finished first in the league in overall defense this past season.

If the Panthers hire Rivera, it’s possible the team could look at Chargers quarterbacks coach John Ramsdell as their next offensive coordinator.
