Veteran QB Volek likely not an option for Panthers

   In Tuesday’s column I floated the idea of the Panthers bringing in veteran free agent QB Billy Volek as a mentor should they decide to draft Auburn QB Cam Newton with the No. 1 pick, given Volek’s familiarity with the Chargers offense and the fact he’s worked under new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.

   While the team wouldn’t (and can’t) comment on current players right now because of the lockout, I’m told by other league sources the Panthers aren’t likely to go that route.

   So you can pretty much cross Volek off the list of potential Panthers quarterbacks.
