CHARLOTTE — As owners and players get set to discuss a new a collective bargaining agreement proposal, several media outlets have reported it will include the NFL experience needed to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) will from six to back to four, as it was in the pre-201o era.
That’s both good and bad news for the Panthers.
The bad news is the Panthers will have 19 unrestricted free agents hitting the market including running back DeAngelo Williams, linebackers Thomas Davis and James Anderson, defensive end Charles Johnson, quarterback Matt Moore, cornerback Richard Marshall, tight ends Jeff King and Dante Rosario and defensive tackle Derek Landri.
The good news is the Panthers will have plenty of money to spend.
One estimate put the Panthers as having more than $70 million to spend under next year’s salary cap. Obviously a good bit of that will be spent on re-signing their own free agents — general manager Marty Hurney has said that is a top priority — but also look for the Panthers to be very active in free agency.
