Although they can’t sign him until Friday, the Carolina Panthers have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent safety Kevin Payne, according to a league source.

A former fifth-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears out of Louisiana-Monroe in 2007, Payne previously played under Ron Rivera for a season in Chicago. Payne recorded 88 tackles, four interceptions and seven pass deflections in his first season as a starter in Chicago but was traded to the Rams last year to make room for Chris Harris.

Payne was placed on injured reserve and then given an injury settlement.
