When WR David Gettis went down with a season-ending knee injury there was immediate speculation the Panthers might go after Buffalo Bills WR Lee Evans, who’s on the trading block, as a replacement.
I was told initially by a source from outside the organization there was some initial interest from the Panthers — and there still might have been – but the fact is the Panthers will not trade for Evans. I’m told the Bills want a third-round draft pick and the Panthers don’t have one. That seems way too high for Evans, who is 30 and had 37 catches for 548 yards and four TDs last year.
In the end, the Panthers are going to stick with the guys they have in camp, at least for now.
So far WRs Legedu Naanee, Armanti Edwards, David Clowney and rookie Kealoha Pilares have all stepped up, and the team also likes Charly Martin. It’s time for Brandon LaFell to start improving his game, too.
In reality, the Panthers have bigger concerns than the No. 2 receiver, the biggest one being cornerback. There isn’t much out there now that can help them, but look for the team to keep a close eye on the waiver wire.
