Breaking news: John Beck will start at QB for the Redskins

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has benched quarterback Rex Grossman in favor of John Beck for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

“I’m excited,” Beck said at a press conference Wednesday at the Redskins facility. “There is a lot of hard work that has gone into this. You try to stay ready. I just want to go out there and do my best.”

Grossman was intercepted four times in last week’s 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but the Redskins are still 3-2 and alive in the race for the NFC East division title. Beck relieved Grossman on Sunday and completed 8 of 15 passes for 117 yards. He also ran for a touchdown.

“This team has a good feeling about it,” Beck said. “When it’s game day we feel good about it.”

The Redskins are also down two starters on the offensive line and tight end Chris Cooley due to injuries.

Beck started four games in his career, all of those coming in 2007 with the Miami Dolphins.

“You have to have guys to step up and make plays,” Beck said.
